Blog Writing #8.1: Your weekend (warmup writing in the Call Lab)

Please write a united and coherent paragraph about your weekend. Start with a topic sentence that will control the direction of the paragraph. Make sure you repeat the key words and use transitions to make the paragraph flow smoothly.

Here are some examples of topic sentences you could choose, or you can make up your own.
1.  I had the best time of my life this weekend.
2.  This weekend was very ordinary/extraordinary/unusual/boring.
3.  My weekend had some good elements and some bad elements.

Example:

My weekend got off to a very unusual start. After I came home on Friday, I ordered a sandwich from a nearby restaurant. When I was ready to pick it up, my car wouldn't start, so I called AAA roadside assistance. As soon as the "guy" tried to start the car, it started without a problem (which made me feel a little embarrassed). He then proceeded to test the battery. He told me that he thought the problem was with the alternator and that I had better get it fixed immediately or else I could get stuck again soon. This was not good news for my weekend, especially since my husband is out of town and I don't have a cell phone, so after I picked up my sandwich, I headed straight to the mechanic. I forgot to mention that I had to show my driver's license to the AAA man and I had forgotten to put it back in my wallet after he left.

So I went to the mechanic, and fortunately, the problem was not with the alternator, which would have cost about $500, but just with a minor part which was interfering with the battery's connection (this was only a $45 repair). While I was discussing the issue with the mechanic, we both noticed that the inspection sticker on the car was out of date, and not just out of date by a few days, but by nearly a year! I could not believe that neither I nor my husband had noticed it all this time (of course I'm thankful that the cops hadn't noticed it either).

So the mechanic sent me to another place just up the road to get my car inspected. At the end of the inspection, the inspector told me that my car didn't pass (that's because my car didn't study for the test LOL). He then asked me if I had done anything with the car battery recently, and I told him that the mechanic had just tinkered with it. The inspector was surprised because the mechanic should have known that my car wouldn't pass due to some emissions issue with the battery. What I needed to do was drive about 75 miles and then return to take the test again; well, I didn't have any plans to drive 75 miles so soon.

After the failed inspection, I headed to the bank, which was just about to close, so I could get some cash for the weekend, because my husband, who usually goes to the bank, didn't have time before leaving for Chicago. Most of the time I don't even carry much cash; I just needed the money to pay my housekeeper. Well, since I didn't have my license, and since I'm not a regular customer at the bank, the bank teller wouldn't give me any money. After some "back and forth" with the manager, they finally decided to give me $100; however, I was then informed that there was a problem with the account (the problem was that it was overdrawn) and that they would have to speak with my husband to authorize a transfer from his business operating account, even though I'm a co-signer. Still, they had mercy on me and gave me the 100 bucks.

So then I came home and I had to pay my housekeeper but I only had $100, which was not enough. Where could I go for some good cash? My son's wallet! So I borrowed some money from him and placed it in an envelope for my housekeeper. After that, I got a little distracted. When my housekeeper came to pick up the envelope, I couldn't find it. It had just disappeared. I couldn't find her cash and now I couldn't get any more cash because the bank didn't like me anymore!

As you can see, my weekend got off to a highly unusual start. One more unusual event happened yesterday. Possibly for the first time in my life, I actually locked myself out of the house, which meant I had to break in to my house through the window!

  1. I had an interesting weekend because it's boring:). My aunt, uncle and me attended a wedding party at a pagoda. This was the first time I attended the wedding that was celebrated in the pagoda. It's really boring because we had to sit 2 hours to listen the priests' pray. After that, we joined the party, and I wasn't surprised that the food had no meat.In the afternoon, my aunt went to her business. After she had finished her job, we stopped by an old German lady's house. That is a nice house which has a lot of dolls. Before we left, she had given me a couple dolls includes an old man and old lady. Although I wasn't interested in the party, I'm still happy about the dolls.

  3. This weekend was very boring. I didn't do anything interesting, I stayed at my apartment most of the time. On Friday, after I finished classes, I went to a restaurant to eat lunch, and after I finished, I went to sugar land to play soccer with some friends. When I finished, I went back to my apartment and stayed there the whole day. On Saturday afternoon, I went to my friend apartment. He invited me to had lunch with him, and that's what I did on Saturday. On Sunday, I just stayed at my apartment to do my homework, and to study, so I think this is the most boring weekend since I came to Houston.

He came to prepare everything in order to move in with the family. I'm happy for that, because i'm going to have a litle part of my family here with me, but still 'big' enough to make me confortable here in USA, in other words, i won't feel alone or lost anymore :).

  10. I had good time of my life this weekend. The story was started last Friday. After class, I was like normal day, I took bus to go back to my apartment. I met one woman who studies in University of Houston. That day was really hot, and we were waiting for bus long time. However, we had fun there. Our style of talking were like old friends; also, we shared our habits, some funny things, and she introduce some good thing in the Houston. For me, I not only knew new friends, but also had chance to practice English. Second, when I arrived my place, I took a rest. At night, we did barbecue that was the best before I ate. In addition, the weather was also the best. There was not mosquito, and it was cool. On Saturday, it was the wonderful day; finally, I had own lop tap. We bought from apple store where was a new place in the Westheimer. There are like small shop center. Moreover, I got good news from my family. I am going to go to Detroit which is holding auto parts and classic car show on August. This time will be my new experience that I am attending show alone. On Sunday, we cooked by ourselves afternoon. Then, I met one of my roommate's friends. We were watching TV show, drinking tea, and having some desserts together. Finally, I did not forget to do my homework. I was thankful teachers who did not give us homework too much, so I could enjoy my weekend.

I'm not sure if you mean the "best time of my life." It sounds like this weekend was very good, but I'm not sure if it sounds like it was the best weekend ever.
