Blog Writing #20: Reported Speech (due Monday, July 8)

I said a lot in class today. I spoke about my trip to Chicago and Wisconsin; I spoke about quoted speech and quotation marks; I introduced adjective clauses; and I introduced cause-and-effect essays.  Wow!

What I would like you to do in this post is report three things I said in class today. You may not repeat what your classmates have said.
(BTW, did you notice the noun clause in the the prior sentence?)

Ex:  1.  Holly, you told us that we had to read the essay on shyness for tomorrow.
2.  You asked us to open our grammar books to the chapter on adjective clauses.
3.  You said that we should not come late to class (well, I didn't say that, but I should have said that).

You must use a reporting verb and you must put the verb in the noun clause in the proper tense.

Let's see how you do...

    1. This is quoted speech, 100% correct (except "first sentence must start," not "must be started.")

However, I want you to write it in reported speech, so try again :D

    1. #1 you said that you HAD HAD an interesting time. Reported speech goes one step back in the past, from simple past to past perfect in this case.

#2 is correct (you don't need to go back in the past because what you quoted was a general truth, which stays in the present tense).

3 has a punctuation problem. Also this is quoted speech. I want reported speech :D

    1. You're not late; don't worry!

For reported speech, we generally place the verb in the noun clause one step back in the past, so...

#1. You said that you HAD HAD a wonderful time... (had is better than spend because we spend time, but we have a wonderful time)--anyhow, my point is that it's past perfect.

#3. You said that Houston weather WAS better than Wisconsin's.
